Snow is average snowfall a year. "To lifts" is the typical drive to the nearest ski hill. Cost of living: 100 = that country's average. Home prices are in local currency. Scores are relative to the other places in this index, from 0 to 100.

- Steamboat Springs gets the most snow in the index, about 430 cm (169 in) a year, and ranks #32.

How we ranked
We included every place on Pinned tagged for skiing, plus any place within about 30 minutes' drive of a ski hill, in both Canada and the USA. Each place gets a score out of 100 built from four things:
- Cost of living, 30%. Lower is better, compared with other ski places in the same country.
- Typical home price, 30%. Lower is better, compared with other ski places in the same country, so exchange rates don't tip the ranking.
- Snow a year, 20%. More is better.
- Drive to the nearest ski hill, 20%. Shorter is better.
For each one, the best place in the index gets full marks and the weakest gets none, with everyone else in between. We add the four parts using the weights above. Ties go to the snowier place.
All figures are approximate averages drawn from the same data as the rest of Pinned. They are for comparing places, not official statistics. Each country's cost of living index is measured against its own national average, and town snowfall is not the same as snowfall up the mountain. Lift tickets, season passes and exchange rates are not included. Check current numbers before you sign a lease or buy.
