Driving
Your old licence works for a short time after you move. After that you need a local one, and the rules depend on the province or state.
Moving to Canada
USA β Canada- Ontario: you can drive on a valid U.S. licence for 60 days. U.S. state licences can be exchanged, though you may need a knowledge or road test depending on your experience. Bring original proof of driving experience.
- British Columbia: you have 90 days to switch to a B.C. licence. ICBC credits up to 15 years of driving experience if you bring an acceptable driving record.
- Other provinces: check your province's licensing office; exchange rules differ by state.
Moving to the U.S.
Canada β USAEach state sets its own rules and deadline for new residents. Some exchange a Canadian licence; others require written and road tests. Look up your state DMV before you move, and bring your Canadian licence and any driver's abstract.
Register your car in your new state promptly. In California, for example, it's within 20 days of becoming a resident.
Keep your insurance history
Before you cancel your old car insurance, ask your insurer for a letter showing how long you've been insured and any claims. New insurers may give you credit for it, which can lower your rate. Also request your driving record (abstract) from your old licensing office.
Common questions
