How to choose where to live: start with the life you want
Skip the "best cities" lists for a minute. Start with what you want a normal Tuesday to look like, then find the places that fit.
Most people start a move by looking at houses. It's more useful to start with your week. Picture an ordinary Tuesday and an ordinary Saturday in your new life. Are you skiing before work, walking to a cafΓ©, golfing in January, or paddling a lake after dinner? Write it down. That short list is your real search filter.
Next, sort your list into must-haves and nice-to-haves. A must-have is something you'd do every week, like being near a ski hill or not shovelling snow. A nice-to-have is something you'd enjoy a few times a year, like a big-city concert. Places that hit every must-have and some nice-to-haves belong on your shortlist. Our lifestyle quiz does this sorting for you and ranks places in Canada and the USA by how well they fit.
Then look at the weather honestly. Average January and July temperatures tell you more than any photo. If you love summer but hate grey winters, sunny days a year matters as much as temperature. The weather and risks page puts these side by side, along with things like wildfire smoke, heat and flood risk that are easy to overlook on a short visit.
Distance matters more than people expect. "Near the mountains" can mean ten minutes or two hours. Check real drive times to what you'll use most: the ski hill, the beach, the airport if you travel for work, and family. The travel times tool shows these for every place on Pinned.
Money is the next filter, not the first. Once you have places that fit your life, compare what day-to-day living and a typical home cost. The cost of living page and compare tool help you see the trade-offs. Sometimes a smaller town an hour away gives you the same lifestyle for much less.
Narrow it down to two or three places, then visit in the season you're least sure about. If you're worried about winter, go in February. Rent for a week or a month if you can, shop for groceries, and drive the commute at rush hour. Our try before you move ideas are a good starting point.
Finally, talk to people who live there. A local agent who knows the lifestyle, not just the listings, can tell you which neighbourhoods suit the way you want to live. You can find a verified agent on Pinned, or browse the best places by lifestyle if you're still exploring.
